Treatments for TMJ

Find out the best ways to get your TMJ-related jaw pain under control.

Are you a serious teeth grinder? Maybe you are but don’t even know it. Tooth grinding, also known as bruxism, can lead to further complications including TMJ disorder. TMJ disorder is a very common jaw problem that causes pain and stiffness, as well as a popping sound when opening and closing the jaws. Dealing with a TMJ disorder? Not sure if you are? Our Williamsburg, VA, dentists Dr. Ricky Rubin, Dr. Brett Dunnill and Dr. Omar Hasham are here to help.

Here are some signs that you may be dealing with TMJ disorder,

  • Jaw pain
  • Earaches
  • Popping or clicking in the ears when opening or closing your mouth
  • Tension headaches
  • Overworked or easily tired jaw muscles
  • Sore jaw muscles
  • Swelling of the face
  • Locked jaw

It is possible that this condition could also be to blame for tinnitus, shoulder pain, toothaches or dizziness. Our Williamsburg, VA, family dentists can examine your jaws and determine if you have TMJ disorder at your next dental visit (or sooner, if you’re in significant pain).

How do you treat TMJ disorder?

The good news is that this problem usually responds well to simple at-home strategies and care. This includes,

  • Using an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen (this will, at the very least, alleviate pain and swelling temporarily)
  • Eating soft foods and avoiding any foods that require stretching of the jaw muscles (e.g. chewing gum)
  • Icing the jaw or using moist heat for about 10 minutes, several times a day
  • Finding effective ways to manage your stress, as stress can make TMJ disorder symptoms worse
  • Massaging your achy jaws and face every day
  • Performing certain soothing and therapeutic jaw stretches and exercises

If home care doesn’t ease your symptoms, then it’s time to consult your dentist.

How can a dentist treat my TMJ disorder?

If home care isn’t enough to quell those angry jaws then a dentist will be able to provide you with some other treatment options including,

  • Stronger pain relievers and muscle relaxants
  • Dental splints (which can support and realign the jaws while you sleep)
  • Physical therapy
